9 Best K-dramas of 2021

I’m usually knee-deep in feel-good, romantic Korean dramas. However, 2021 has been a nice and surprising mix on the watch list – cheering on an old man who dreams of dancing, has a lot invested in cute brain cells in blue suits who have a hell of a job, or spends sleepless nights after bloody, violent games. . Here are the best K-dramas of 2021.

The best Korean dramas of 2021

in 2021, Squid game rose to #1 on Netflix, and suddenly everyone was talking about K-dramas! Have you used it yet? No problem (but be brave!). It’s great for new fans backlist return minus the violence Squid game. You will find romantic comedies, historical dramas and exciting thrillers in the most popular categories of Korean dramas 2021.

1. Yumi cells (2021)

Yumi cells is funny, smart, lovey-dovey. It follows working lady Yumi (Kim Go-eun) and the brain cells (the cutest things!) that control her life. Before I watched the drama, I imagined it to be something like that Inside out. It’s not-Yumi cells is unique, innovative and incredibly funny. Every episode was wholesome in its own way—Ruby teaching Yumi how to be cute (shoulder spike? Lobster claws? Those flirty killer moves!), dates with boyfriend Goo Woon (Ahn Bo-hyun), a love cell in a coma, an incredible stomach cell compartment diagram that always leave room for dessert. You’ll definitely want to check out the original web movie created by Lee Dong-gun that inspired the series. I slowly laugh my way through the bite-sized comics.

2. Beyond evil (2021)

Who doesn’t love a small-town murder mystery, especially one with collective secrets and tight-knit groups? Beyond evil was one of the most talked about shows, unanimously hailed as one of the best K-dramas of 2021. Police officer Han Joo-won (Ywo Jin-goo) is transferred to Manyang Police Substation, where he tries to solve a series of mystery murders that happened twenty years ago. His prime suspect is his partner, policeman Lee Don-sik (Shin Ha-kyun), but soon all the townspeople are considered suspects. Beyond Evil makes you think, makes you confused, and makes you bite your nails as you try to solve murders that continue in the present day. Of course, Dong-sik’s calculated smirks don’t help at all.

4. Vincenzo (2021)

Do you love a good construction story? Vincenzo (Song Joong-ki) was adopted by the Cassano family and raised in Italy. He is a mob consultant and Don’s right-hand man. After escaping an assassination attempt, Vincenzo flees to Seoul to recover some hidden gold that the recently deceased tycoon has stashed in the basement of the dilapidated Geumga Plaza. However, the residents of Geumga Plaza don’t want to move out, and the big (evil) Babylon group wants to take over the building. Big conglomerates, competing law firms, rogue lawyers, murders, parties, handsome villains – this one has it all. Although the same wording happens in different scenarios in the last few episodes, Vincenzo promises laughter and camaraderie. The witty, ambitious Hong Chae-jung (Jeon Yeo-been), a rival lawyer who doesn’t mind breaking the rules, steals the show.

5. Squid game (2021)

Squid game was in fashion in 2021. I dropped it soon enough when I first watched it because of the violence. No joke, the show gave me real bloody nightmares. The hype and memes got to me and I decided to try again. It’s violent, gory, but definitely worth your time. In Squid game, 456 players who have some sort of financial debt decide to play games to win a $40 million jackpot. The games are based on children’s games in Korea, such as balls, honeycomb, hopscotch, but have a deadly ending (literally). Squid game shines a light on the evils of capitalism, the growing number of debt-ridden youth, class divides, economic struggle and migrant labour. As much as I cringed at the gory scenes, my heart broke for the reliable, loyal Ali (Anupam Tripathi). I cheered for the irresponsible man with a heart Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), got mad at the scheming Cho Sang-woo (Park Hae-soo) and despaired of Kang Sae-byeok (Ho Yeon-jung). The show is definitely one of the best K-dramas of 2021, and the memory of it still scares me.

6. Navillera (2021)

A slow burn follows retired postal worker Shim Deok-chul (Park In-hwan) who dreams of dancing Swan Lake before his death, despite being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and his unlikely friendship with a young ballet dancer (Song Kang) who is forced to become an instructor. Navillera is inspiring, tear-jerking, and whispers in your ear that dreams have no expiration date.

7. Mr. Queen (2021)

A modern-day haughty chef (Choi Jin-hyuk) who works at the Blue House is in the body of Queen So-young (Shin Hye-sun) during the Joseon period of King Cheoljong (Kim Jung-hyun), the reigning monarch. The chef in the guise of the queen tries to flatter the royal opponents with modern skin care and delicious food (although the Joseon era royal chef hates a woman in the kitchen) – international cuisine, Mc Donald’s with a twist, ramen. Shin Hye-sun steals the show portraying her two selves, the meek queen and the arrogant man, with her witty dialogue. The resolution of the story was disappointing, but it promises laughs and lip-smackingly delicious food.

8. Move to heaven (2021)

Inspired by the essays of ex-traumatologist Kim Sae-Bul (Things Left Behind), Move to heaven ushers us into the world of cleansers of loss, sorrow and trauma. An ex-convict (Lee Je-hoon), his Asperger’s nephew (Tang Jun-sang) runs a trauma cleaning company where they dispose of the deceased’s belongings. In the process, they learn the stories of those who died and confront their repressed memories. Sad and quiet.

9. Penthouse (2021)

What to write about Penthouse! This one is for makjang lovers. Think rich families, art schools, fancy apartments, murder (often in a gory, grotesque way), rich mommy groups, scandals and affairs, secret rooms, etc. Penthouse grew on me from season one. Love it, hate it; you just can’t ignore it – your ex’s helicopter wedding crash, drugs that make you forget (yes, anything is possible) certain parts of your life, murdered school kids, evil twins, creepy housekeeper, grand wedding, bribes – this drama created I Forget, that we are in the middle of a pandemic. Still to watch Penthouse 3but it’s definitely on my list.
